Our Story

Finn Comfort Waldi factory circa 1950

Footwear experts for more than 70 years...

FinnComfort® is a family-owned business and is one of the few remaining brands in the world that still manufactures our own shoes.  The FinnComfort® factory is in Haßfurt, Germany - a small, idyllic town in Lower Franconia, close to Bamberg.  Despite enormous market pressure from low-wage countries, FinnComfort® has managed to hold onto their home location for 75 years.

A Brand You Can Trust

Our “Made in Germany” label, speaks to the brand quality we strive for. We use only premium materials and combine state-of-the-art processes with highly skilled handcrafting. There are over 100 separate production steps required to make a FinnComfort® shoe. Because we produce our own shoes it means we can:

  • Properly ensure high-quality manufacturing processes.
  • Guarantee that only high-quality, natural materials are used.
  • Effectively combine traditional craftsmanship with modern technology
  • Prioritize sustainability and environmental standards in the manufacturing processes.

In this way, FinnComfort® ensures production of healthy shoes that we can also feel good about!

Our History

The Beginning

Waldi Schuhfabrik GmbH, founded in 1945, began as a children’s shoe manufacturing company.  In 1965, ski boots were added to the children’s shoe collection, along with ski boots for women. By 1974, they added a full production of women’s shoes, and in 1978 added men’s shoes.

The company later created an orthopedic line, which would also include adjustable shoes and anatomical footbeds; and in 1986, the FinnComfort® brand was founded. Not even 10 years later, FinnComfort® earned the 1995 Fit Award from Faculty of Biomechanics at ITHP Cologne.

Expansion & Growth

To accommodate the growing global demand for FinnComfort® footwear, the factory was expanded in 2001 to add Production Factory II.  New environmental standards were introduced, with an emphasis on sustainability and corporate responsibility.

FinnComfort® also expanded the use of natural materials in their footwear.  This included breathable, skin-friendly, vegetable tanned leathers, CFC-free foam, natural cork, jute, latex, and solvent free sole bonding with water-based dispersion adhesives. They also decided to eliminate the use of harmful preservatives, along with AZO dyes and allergy-inducing nickel compounds.

Today & Beyond

By 2013, the factory was expanded further to include a brand new FinnComfort® Design and Development center along with Factory III.

Today, the entire facility only uses renewable energy (wind, solar, water) and we continue to explore ways to improve the environmental efficiency of our production methods. We believe that authentically healthy footwear must be produced in a way that promotes wellness for both the individual and also the environment.
